Parents Information Session: Vertical Tutoring |
|
For some time now the Governors and staff have been seeking considering better ways in which the pastoral system of the school which is currently arranged into year based tutor groups could be developed in order to maximise our strengths and improve the experiences of all pupils.
Vertical tutoring is a new system that we are adopting from September and it means that instead of pupils belonging to a form group made up of only their own age group, each group will be mixed across year groups. The school will be divided into 5 Pastoral Learning Groups, each with 9 tutor groups which would contain a smaller number of pupils than existing groups.
This new structure relates entirely to tutor groups and the pastoral system; not to lessons in subject areas where pupils will continue to be taught with others of their own age and ability.
You are invited to a Parent's Forum that will be held in school at 7.00 pm on Monday 8 March where Mr Hayes will give more detail about the changes and be available to answer your questions. |
The Y10 Careers Convention at Ballysillan Leisure Centre was a great success! Pupils explored a range of career paths from Engineering, Policing, Hair and Beauty, Social Work, to name a few. They also had the opportunity to explore post 16 options via Further and Higher Education establishments such as Newtownabbey Regional College, University of Ulster and discussed available Apprenticeship programmes with relevant personnel. As a result pupils left feeling invigorated and armed with Career information! Check out the photographs to learn more.

Haiti Appeal Final Roundup |
Glengormley High School and Belfast High School pupils and staff worked in colloboration to raise funds for 'Shelterbox Appeal' ..... this is
an initiative that has been set up through Rotary International and these much needed supplies will be sent to the people of Haiti in the next days.
The contents of each box will help sustain life for ten people for at least one year and it is the wish for Pastors Sam and Marie Grant from
Christchurch Carrickfergus to raise enough funding through their church to reach out to at least one hundred people. The total amount raised
from both schools is £2930.00 and this will be added to other funds that have been gained from Staff at Odyssey, Belfast and through the generous
donations of the congregation at Christchurch Carrickfergus to help in this appeal. Pastor Sam Grant from Christchurch Carrickfergus and Mr Michael McCune from the Carrickfergus Rotary Club (and member of Christchurch) visited
both schools on Friday 12th Feburary to receive the cheques from staff and pupils. Principals of Belfast High School and Glengormley High School,
Mrs L Gormley and Mr A Hayes were delighted with the efforts made by staff and pupils from both schools).
Mrs L Cleland from the youth centre also raised a further £250.00
ontop of our GHS total of £1430.00 for Shelterbox Appeal - with the pupils involved with the Prince's Trust. This now brings our total to a staggering £1680.00.
